Het Europese recht is voor vrijwel alle sectoren van grote invloed. In veel sectoren wordt de eerlijke concurrentie op de Europese interne markt gewaarborgd door middel van zeer gedetailleerde en veelal complexe voorschriften die betrekking hebben op de markttoegang, de productieprocessen en de producten en diensten die op de markt worden aangeboden.

Het Houthoff EU-team heeft veel ervaring met voorschriften op uiteenlopende terreinen zoals levensmiddelen, biociden, pesticiden, REACH, automotive, en gereguleerde sectoren zoals de spoorsector. Het EU-team combineert een grondige kennis van het EU recht met een ruime ervaring in het voeren van procedures voor de Europese Commissie en de Europese rechterlijke instanties (Hof van Justitie en het Gerecht van de Europese Unie). Zo adviseren de leden van het EU-team regelmatig over Europeesrechtelijke argumenten in nationale procedures. Het EU-team was bijvoorbeeld betrokken bij de nationale proefprocedure door Nationale Nederlanden die resulteerde in een prejudiciële procedure voor het Hof van Justitie van de EU.

Cliënten benaderen het EU-team indien zij oneerlijke concurrentie ondervinden als gevolg van onjuiste toepassing of interpretatie van EU recht of van nationale beschermende maatregelen zoals bijvoorbeeld discriminerende belastingen of andere belemmeringen van het vrij verkeer van goederen, van bijvoorbeeld merkproducten of geneesmiddelen.

Het EU-team staat voor een effectieve inbreng in de besluitvormingsprocessen van de Europese instellingen en een effectieve uitoefening van de rechten die kunnen worden ontleend aan het Europese recht in nationale of Europese gerechtelijke procedures.

The EU Court has ruled in favour of Nationale-Nederlanden.

Houthoff assisted the AMC and VUmc hospitals in obtaining the required approval from the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) for an administrative merger. The approval enables the two Amsterdam-based university medical centres to cooperate on patient care, research, education and training without limitation. This will create the biggest university medical centre in the Netherlands.

Houthoff is representing the association of realtors, VBO Makelaar, in ongoing civil proceedings before the court of Amsterdam against Funda. Funda is the largest online real estate portal in the Netherlands and a subsidiary of the largest association of realtors in the Netherlands, NVM. The case is one of the few Dutch cases based on abuse of dominance. The case revolves around discriminatory practices by Funda to the detriment of VBO Makelaar's members.

Advising H2 Equity partners on the sale of its majority stake in its portfolio company Dümmen Orange to BC Partners. Dümmen Orange is a leading breeder of cut flowers and potted plants with production in Europe, Central America and East Africa. The transaction is a subject to regulatory approvals and it is expected to be closed in the coming months.
